How it used to be done.
I saw this recently at St Patrick`s, Ryhope. I suppose we are more shy nowadays about asking for funds. I remember reading somewhere the national average donation at Mass is 89p.
My parents used to tell me of the famous Fr Pickering of Byermoor in the 1930's - 1940's who used to announce the amounts given at Christmas and Easter in descending order of value. Finishing with "Michael Hinds, tuppence". The announcements were made at Mass, in the presence of the whole Parish. But we all remember the days when the Ecclesiastical Education Fund donations were published in a reasonably thick volume for the whole Diocese, broken down by parish, where individual generosity or not was there for all to see. Times change.
