Traditionis custodes

So the motu proprio altering Summorum Pontificum came out today as predicted. It makes grim reading. Permission for the Latin Mass has to be sought from one`s bishop again. Fortunately we will have no problems in this diocese with bishop Robert Byrne. In fact he has already been in touch wih the celebrants of the EF in this diocese. The restriction on not allowing Mass in parish churces takes us back to Quattuor Abhinc Annos of 1984 which said the same but alllowed exceptions. Most diocees in this country only have parish churches. In this diocese it would mean Ushaw would be the only option. However as existing celebrations are to continue, as the bishop is to establish locations for the Mass but not to allow any new ones we have no option but parish churches. The restriction on new celebrants having to have authorisation from Rome seems bizarre. How will Rome know anything about the suitability of the priest? The appointment of a diocesan priest as moderator for the Mass could be a good thing to ensure all is done well and to help instruct the new celebrants. Clearly this is a move to restrictt the growth of the Extraordinary Form. As it is a growth area in the Church I don`t see it succeeding and all it will do is to tarnish the reputations of the pope and archbishop Roche as they try to obstruct the growth of the ancient Roman rite.

  1. Having read the comments from the Pope I am at a loss to understand how he can say that the Holy Spirit guided Pope Benedict in freeing up the EF Mass while at the same time claiming the guidance of the same Holy Spirit is his preventing it. Surely the Holy Spirit, as a omniscient part of the Holy Trinity, would have foreseen the difficulties caused by His giving contrasting guidance to 2 different Popes.
Whilst having no problem with the Novus Ordo (when celebrated properly i.e without roller skates etc) I must say that with Latin being the language of the Church I have great difficulty in receiving much help from Mass celebrated in 'foreign' languages. My language skills are such that, given sufficient time, I can tease out French but the fact that Latin leaves little or no freedom for innovations means that I can follow Mass anywhere in the world using the translations in my missal. In fact don't most of us do this anyway. God grant us a Pope who will return the Church to be the One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church

    1. "God grant us a Pope who will return the Church to be the One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church." Is this supposed to mean that the Church is not now these things? If it isn't these things then what is it? Where is it?

  2. Pope Francis has not altered Summorum Pontificum, he has tried to obliterate it. The fact that a pope - A POPE - should act so ruthlessly to eradicate a form of Mass which has sustained saints and sinners for nearly two millennia is utterly incomprehensible. Down through the centuries many people have attempted to 'kill off' the traditional Latin Mass of the Church but all have failed. This attempt will also fail and will be the label that history will hang around the neck of Pope Francis and his papacy.

  3. A simple solution would be to agree with the Bishop you are going to use MR1920 - that would not contradict this legislation!

  4. The Real old stuff- 1920 edition of the Roman Missal, no ifs no buts, no 1962, see Dom Gueranger:The Liturgical Year, a vast commentary on the unaltered Missal, see St Lawrence Press Blog (and their superb Ordo) or a copy of the St Andrew's Daily Missal published before, say, 1950.

  5. Can priests ordained prior to the motu proprio celebrate the EF Mass with the permission of their bishops or does the necessity for application to Rome for permission relate only to post motu proprio priests? Can ANY priest celebrate the EF Mass 'privately' without permission?
